The spatiotemporal distribution and transport of mercury, zinc, molybdenum, rubidium, and strontium from alpine terrestrial ecosystems to alpine lake and mountain stream populations of Cottus poecilopus were investigated. Metals were measured for 66 wild fish collected from different lakes and Javorinka stream across. Mercury was measured in the pectoral fins, other elements in the skull. Bullheads contained more metals in the alpine lakes than in the mountain stream. In particular, mercury and zinc concentrations in lake bullheads were 6 and 2.5 times higher, respectively, than those of stream-dwelling fish. New data were generated on metal bioaccumulation in fish of understudied West Carpathian alpine lake environments. In July 2018, a major flood occurred in the area of the Javorinka. Already then, the mercury content in bullheads increased significantly. Bioaccumulation of mercury in fish occurred very quickly after the flood and was also significant in the following 2019. Then, the concentrations of mercury quickly decreased up to 70% in 2021-2022. Average concentrations of molybdenum and rubidium in bullheads in the stream rapidly declined in the year following the flood disturbance, but within less than 2 years, the metal levels stabilized at about the same level as in 2017 prior the flood. Strontium concentrations in fish dropped rapidly immediately after the flood, increased in the following years, and dropped again after 4 years, suggesting that many more factors are influencing strontium bioaccumulation in fish that are comparable in magnitude to the flood. The most serious warning seems to be the absence of biogenic zinc. The average concentration in the Alpine bullheads population in the stream has declined by 70% in less than 5 years and is steadily declining. An important result of this study is the demonstration that disturbance by a single factor (heavy rainfall and flooding) has a clear and timely effect on average metal concentrations in the fish population.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines propose the inclusion of quantitative measurements from 82Rubidium positron emission tomography (RbPET) to discriminate obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD). However, the effect on diagnostic accuracy is unknown. The aim was to investigate the optimal RbPET reading algorithm for improved identification of obstructive CAD. METHODS: Prospectively enrolled patients (N=400) underwent RbPET and invasive coronary angiography with fractional flow reserve and quantitative coronary angiography. Quantitative measurements (myocardial blood flow (MBF), MBF reserve, transient ischemic dilatation) by RbPET were step-wisely added to a qualitative assessment by the summed stress score based on their diagnostic accuracy of obstructive CAD by invasive coronary angiography-fractional flow reserve. Prespecified cutoffs were summed stress score ≥4, hyperemic MBF 2.00 mL/g per min, and MBF reserve 1.80, respectively. Hemodynamically obstructive CAD was defined as >90% diameter stenosis or invasive coronary angiography-fractional flow reserve ≤0.80, and sensitivity analyses included a clinically relevant reference of anatomically severe CAD (>70% diameter stenosis by invasive coronary angiography-quantitative coronary angiography). RESULTS: Hemodynamically obstructive CAD was present in 170/400 (42.5%) patients. Stand-alone summed stress score showed a sensitivity and specificity of 57% and 93%, respectively, while hyperemic MBF showed similar sensitivity (61%, P=0.57) but lower specificity (85%, P=0.008). With increased discrimination by receiver-operating characteristic curves (0.78 versus 0.85; P<0.001), combining summed stress score, MBF and MBF reserve showed the highest sensitivity of 77% but lower specificity of 74% (P<0.001 for both comparisons). Against anatomically severe CAD, all measures independently yielded high discrimination ≥0.90 with increased sensitivity and lower specificity by additional quantification. CONCLUSIONS: The inclusion of quantitative measurements to a RbPET read increases in the identification of obstructive CAD. BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is the non-invasive gold standard for non-invasively determining left ventricular volumes (LVVs) and ejection fraction (EF). We aimed to assess the accuracy of LVV and left ventricular ejection fraction measured by positron emission tomography (PET) as compared to CMR. METHODS: Patients who underwent both PET and CMR within 1 year were identified from prospective institutional registries. Analysis was performed to evaluate the agreement between the raw and body-surface-area-normalized left ventricular volume (LVV) and EF derived from PET vs. those derived from CMR. RESULTS: The study population consisted of 669 patients (mean age 62 ± 13 years, 65% male). The median (interquartile range [IQR]) duration between CMR and PET imaging was 36 (7-118) days. The median (IQR) EF values were 52% (38-63%) on CMR and 53% (37-65%) on PET (mean difference: 0.53% ± 9.1, P = 0.129) with a strong correlation (Spearman rho = 0.84, P < 0.001; Intraclass Correlation Coefficient 0.84, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.82-0.86, P < 0.001; Lin's concordance correlation coefficient was 0.844, 95% CI: 0.822 to 0.865). Results were similar with LVV, normalized LVV/EF, and in subgroups of patients with reduced EF, coronary artery disease scar, and LV hypertrophy as well as in patients with defibrillators. However, PET tended to underestimate LVV compared to CMR. CONCLUSION: Our analysis showed a strong correlation of EF and LVV by PET against a reference standard of CMR, whereas PET significantly underestimated LVV, but not EF, compared to CMR.

In the present study, biocompatible luminescent of nanosized fluorapatite doped with rubidium(I) (Rb+ ion) and europium(III) (Eu3+ ion) ions were synthesized via hydrothermal method. It was investigated the influence of co-doped Rb+ and Eu3+ ions on the structural, and morphological characteristics of the obtained fluorapatite materials. The characterization techniques utilized included: X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Moreover, to establish the influence of the co-doped Rb+ and Eu3+ ions on the luminescence properties of the lanthanide ion, emission excitation, emission spectrum and luminescence decays were measured. This confirmed a distinct red emission originating from Eu3+ ions and an increased emission lifetime. To determine the biocompatibility of the obtained fluorapatite compounds, in vitro studies using normal dermal human fibroblasts were performed. The results of these studies clearly demonstrate the remarkable biocompatibility of our compounds. This discovery opens exciting prospects for the use of synthetic fluorapatites doped with Eu3+ and Rb+ ions in various biomedical contexts. In particular, these materials hold great promise for potential applications in regenerative engineering, but also serve as innovative and practical solutions as bone scaffolds and dental implants containing nano-fluorapatite. Further discussion of these properties can be found in this article, along with a discussion of their importance and potential in the field of biomedical applications. However, according to our pervious study and based on our current investigations but also based on available scientific records, it was proposed potential molecular mechanism of Rb+ ions in the process of osteoclastogenesis.

The aim of this study was to estimate the administered dosage of 81mKr noble gas as calculated by the radioactivity of 81Rb-rubidium hydroxide (81RbOH). The administered dosage was regarded as the total amount of 81mKr noble gas. The radioactivity of 81mKr was calculated using the radioactivity of 81RbOH at the examination, the beginning of inhalation, the inhalation duration and the attenuation volume from the generator to the patient for 81mKr noble gas. In addition, we created an Internet survey and asked National University Hospital in Japan to respond to questions regarding the parameters of concern. Survey responses were provided by 38 hospitals (response rate was 90.5%). Twenty-seven hospitals (64.3%) examined lung ventilation scintigraphy using 81mKr noble gas. The mean administered dosage and the effective dose of lung ventilation scintigraphy using 81mKr noble gas were 35.8 ± 22.1 GBq and 0.97 ± 0.60 mSv, respectively.

Introduction: The prevalence of obesity is rising globally, with negative effects on the socioeconomic system. As a result of its drivers which include low-grade chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and fatty acid metabolism, this phenotype develops metabolic anomalies that exacerbate its pathogenesis. It has been discovered that metals and metalloids have substantial effects on both the immune system and metabolism and are influenced by factors connected to obesity. Although there is a known connection between metals, obesity, and related metabolic disorders, it is still under research. Methods: We determined the plasma levels of 16 metals and metalloids in 76 individuals with obesity and investigated the relationships with inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers in order to clarify the processes by which metals/metalloids exhibit their effects. Results: After adjusting for age, gender, BMI, physical activity level, smoking, the existence of metabolic abnormalities, and dietary intake of the corresponding metal, regression analysis revealed the following statistically significant associations; vanadium was negatively associated with oxLDL (Beta ± SE= -0.014 ± 0.005, p=0.007), zinc was negatively associated with leptin (Beta ± SE= -12.390 ± 5.226, p=0.025), cobalt was associated negatively with adiponectin (Beta ± SE= -0.030 ± 0.012, p=0.001) and positively with MPO (Beta ± SE= 0.002 ± 0.001, p=0.023), and rubidium was negatively associated with oxLDL (Beta ± SE= -1.139 ± 0.411, p=0.008) and positively with MPO (Beta ± SE= 0.324 ± 0.102, p=0.003). Discussion: The aforementioned associations highlight the need for further research, demonstrating the importance of inflammation and oxidative stress in the association between metals/metalloids and obesity-related metabolic abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: A balanced diet containing selenium (Se) and other trace elements is essential for normal development and growth. Se has been recognized as an essential trace element; however, its interaction with other elements has not been fully investigated. In the present study, sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), Se and rubidium (Rb), were analysed in liver and brain regions under altered dietary Se intake in weanling mice to identify major discriminatory elements. METHODS: The study investigated the effects of different levels of Se intake on the elemental composition in liver and brain tissues of weaned mice. After 24 weeks of feeding with Se adequate, deficient, and excess diets, elemental analysis was performed on the harvested tissues using Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Statistical analysis that included analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation coefficient analysis, principal component analysis, and partial least squares discriminant analysis were performed. RESULTS: The ANCOVA showed statistically significant changes and correlations among the analysed elements under altered dietary Se status. The multivariate analysis showed differential changes in elements in liver and brain regions. The results suggest that long-term dietary Se alternations lead to dyshomeostasis in trace elements that are required in higher concentrations compared to Se. It was observed that changes in the Fe, Co, and Rb levels were similar in all the tissues studied, whereas the changes in Mg, Cr, and Mn levels were different among the tissues under altered dietary Se status. Additionally, the changes in Rb levels correlated with the dietary Se intake but had no relation with the tissue Se levels. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest interactions between Mg, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Se under altered Se status may impact cellular functions during postnatal development. However, the possible biological significance of alterations in Rb levels under different dietary Se paradigms needs to be further explored.

BACKGROUND: Although most biological systems, including human tissues, contain rubidium, its biogeochemical functions and possible role in neonatal birthweight are largely unknown. An animal study indicated a correlation between rubidium deficiency in the maternal diet and lower newborn birthweight. OBJECTIVE: This pilot study measured rubidium concentrations in amniotic fluid during the second trimester of (low-risk) pregnancy and investigated potential correlations between rubidium levels and third-trimester newborn birthweight-small for gestational age, appropriate for gestational age, and large for gestational age-and between preterm birth and term birth in uncomplicated pregnancies. STUDY DESIGN: This prospective, single-center study investigated a possible relationship between rubidium concentration in second-trimester amniotic fluid and third-trimester birthweight percentile. Amniotic fluid (at a median gestational age of 19 weeks) was sampled to determine rubidium concentration. Maternal and newborn characteristics were obtained from participant and delivery records. RESULTS: After screening 173 pregnant women, 99 amniotic fluid samples were evaluated. Midpregnancy median rubidium concentrations were significantly lower among newborns that were classified as small for gestational age than among newborns that were classified as appropriate for gestational age (106 vs 136 µg/L; P<.01). Based on a logistic regression random forest model, amniotic fluid rubidium was identified as a significant contributing factor to appropriate-for-gestational-age birthweight with 54% of the total contribution. CONCLUSION: Amniotic fluid rubidium concentration seems to be a strong predictor of appropriate-for-gestational-age birthweight and a potential marker for newborn birthweight classifications. In particular, low rubidium concentrations in amniotic fluid during midpregnancy are linked to third-trimester lower birthweight percentile. These findings could potentially serve as a valuable tool for early identification of pregnancy outcomes. Further investigation is necessary to fully explore the effect of rubidium on fetal development.

Background Coronary microvascular disease (CMD) may be part of a systemic small vessel disease that also manifests as neurological impairment and kidney disease. However, clinical evidence supporting a potential link is scarce. We assessed whether CMD is associated with an increased risk of small vessel disease in the kidney and brain. Methods and Results A retrospective multicenter (n=3) study of patients clinically referred to 82-rubidium positron emission tomography myocardial perfusion imaging was conducted between January 2018 and August 2020. Exclusion criterion was reversible perfusion defects >5%. CMD was defined as myocardial flow reserve (MFR) ≤2. The primary outcome, microvascular event, was defined by hospital contact for chronic kidney disease, stroke, or dementia. Among 5122 patients, 51.7% were men, median age 69.0 [interquartile range, 60.0-75.0] years, 11.0% had left ventricular ejection fraction ≤40%, and 32.4% had MFR ≤2. MFR was associated with baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate after multivariable adjustment (ß=0.04 [95% CI, 0.03-0.05]; P<0.001). During a median follow-up of 3.05 years, 383 (7.5%) patients suffered an event (253 cerebral and 130 renal), more frequently in patients with MFR ≤2 versus MFR >2 (11.6% versus 5.5%, P<0.001). MFR ≤2 was associated to outcome with a hazard ratio (HR) of 2.30 (95% CI, 1.88-2.81, P<0.001) and an adjusted HR of 1.62 (95% CI, 1.32-2.00, P<0.001). Results were consistent across subgroups defined by presence of irreversible perfusion defects, estimated glomerular filtration rate, diabetes, left ventricular ejection fraction, and previous revascularization. Conclusions This is the first large-scale cohort study to link CMD to microvascular events in the kidney and brain. Data support the hypothesis that CMD is part of a systemic vascular disorder.

The trace element thallium (Tl) exerts its toxic effects, at least in part, through its mimicry of potassium (K+) and subsequent impairment of K+ homeostasis. However, the specific nature of this effect remains poorly understood, especially in aquatic biota that are threatened by elevated concentrations of Tl associated with mining and refining effluents. In this study experiments were conducted to mechanistically examine the relationship between Tl and K+ in terms of uptake and toxicity in the regulatory model species Daphnia magna. In one set of experiments the effects of K+, the K+ analog rubidium (Rb+), and generalized K+ channel blocker cesium (Cs+) on Tl-induced acute toxicity were examined. The presence of increasing concentrations of K+ and Rb+ in exposure water reduced waterborne Tl toxicity, indicating that the actions of Tl were mediated at least in part through interactions with K+. However, in the presence of elevated water Cs+, the toxicity of Tl paradoxically increased. Pharmaceuticals with putative blocking actions on K+ channels failed to alter whole-body K+ of control organisms, but in the case of clozapine and chlorpropamide, whole-body K+ status was significantly elevated relative to exposures with Tl alone, which tended to reduce this metric. These data identify inwardly rectifying and voltage gated K+ channels as potential loci of Tl toxicity. Experiments using rubidium (Rb+) as a tracer of K+, showed that waterborne Tl affects the uptake of K+, but the magnitude of inhibition by Tl was not sufficient to explain the effect on whole-body K+. While these data indicate interactions between Tl and K occur at K+ transporters in D magna, they also indicate that environmental levels of K+ are likely to ameliorate toxicity in most natural waters.

BACKGROUND: 99mTc-sestamibi single photon emission tomography (SPECT) method is widely used for imaging coronary artery disease (CAD). 82-Rubidium-PET is an alternative method that can be used to perform the same purpose. PURPOSE/AIM: This study aims to determine whether 82-Rubidium-PET can offer extra value over 99mTc-sestamibi SPECT in imaging CAD. METHODS: To achieve the study aim, a systematic review of the literature for the 2 tracers were conducted. The aim of the systemic review was to find every related previous study that corresponded to well-defined scientific criteria. The analysis of the results was restricted to peer-reviewed papers in order to avoid any selective outcome reports. Besides, extra analysis was carried out to curb or avoid any ascertainment bias. The qualified studies selected for this research were then assessed for the risk of bias. Furthermore, the details of the methods were rechecked to ensure that they were comparable, before synthesizing the results. RESULTS: Eighteen original studies were selected and included in the final analysis out of 803 articles identified at the initial research. Overall, the mean value of sensitivity and specificity for diagnosis of CAD was 84.3% and 75.4%, respectively for technetium 99m sestamibi (99mTc-MIBI). On the other hand, for 82-Rubidium-PET, the mean value of sensitivity and specificity for diagnosis of CAD was 81% and 81%, respectively. The accuracy of diagnostics of these imaging modalities was dependent on the radiotracers and stress agent used in these studies, with 99mTc-MIBI achieving the highest diagnostic value. CONCLUSION: This study concludes that 99mTc-MIBI-SPECT has higher diagnostic value for diagnosing CAD compared to 82-Rubidium-PET. This indicates that 99mTc-MIBI-SPECT is a more valuable technique for predicting CAD. Besides, for the stress agents used to stimulate the heart and increase workload, this research/study recommends the use of adenosine for the SPECT and the use of dipyridamole for positron emission tomography. However, it suggests the need for more systemic and theoretical studies to assess the real value of 82-Rubidium-PET and the value of stress agents.

For the characterization of Kv 7.2/3 channel activators, several analytical methods are available that vary in effort and cost. In addition to the technically elaborate patch-clamp method, which serves as a reference method, there exist several medium to high-throughput screening methods including a rubidium efflux flame-atomic absorption spectrometry (F-AAS) assay and a commercial thallium uptake fluorescence-based assay. In this study, the general suitability of a graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS)-based rubidium efflux assay as a screening method for Kv 7.2/3 channel activators was demonstrated. With flupirtine serving as a reference compound, 16 newly synthesizedcompounds and the known Kv 7.2/3 activator retigabine were first classified as either active or inactive by using the GF-AAS-based rubidium (Rb) efflux assay. Then, the results were compared with a thallium (Tl) uptake fluorescence-based fluorometric imaging plate reader (FLIPR) potassium assay. Overall, 16 of 17 compounds were classified by the GF-AAS-based assay in agreement with their channel-activating properties determined by the more expensive Tl uptake, fluorescence-based assay. Thus, the performance of the GF-AAS-based Rb assay for primary drug screening of Kv 7.2/3-activating compounds was clearly demonstrated, as documented by the calculated Z'-factor of the GF-AAS-based method. Moreover, method development included optimization of the coating of the microtiter plates and the washing procedure, which extended the range of this assay to poorly adherent cells such as the HEK293 cells used in this study.

BACKGROUND: Despite clinical suspicion, many non-invasive tests for coronary artery disease (CAD) are normal. Coronary artery calcification score (CACS) is a well-validated method to detect and risk stratify CAD. Patients with zero calcium score (ZCS) rarely have abnormal tests. Therefore, aims were to evaluate CACS as a gatekeeper to further functional downstream testing for CAD and estimate potential radiation and cost savings. METHODS: Consecutive patients with suspected CAD referred for PET were included (n = 2640). Prevalence and test characteristics of ZCS were calculated in different groups. Summed stress score ≥ 4 was considered abnormal and summed difference score ≥ 7 equivalent to ≥ 10% ischemia. To estimate potential radiation/cost reduction, PET scans were hypothetically omitted in ZCS patients. RESULTS: Mean age was 65 ± 11 years, 46% were female. 21% scans were abnormal and 26% of patients had ZCS. CACS was higher in abnormal PET (median 561 vs 27, P < 0.001). Abnormal PET was significantly less frequent in ZCS patients (2.6% vs 27.6%, P < 0.001). Sensitivity/negative predictive value (NPV) of ZCS to detect/exclude abnormal PET and ≥ 10% ischemia were 96.8% (95%-CI 95.0%-97.9%)/97.4% (95.9%-98.3%) and 98.9% (96.7%-99.6%)/99.6% (98.7%-99.9%), respectively. Radiation and cost reduction were estimated to be 23% and 22%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: ZCS is frequent, and most often consistent with normal PET scans. ZCS offers an excellent NPV to exclude an abnormal PET and ≥ 10% ischemia across different gender and age groups. CACS is a suitable gatekeeper before advanced cardiac imaging, and potential radiation/cost savings are substantial. However, further studies including safety endpoints are needed.

Tea (Camellia sinensis L.) is one of the most widely consumed non-alcoholic beverages worldwide. In the present study, 73 commercial tea samples were collected from tea plantations in the Southwest, South, Jiangnan, and Jiangbei regions of China. The contents of four macroelements (phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg)) and 15 trace metals (arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), aluminium (Al), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), thorium (Th), thallium (Tl), rubidium (Rb) and barium (Ba)) in tea samples were determined. The mean concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb, Zn, Al, Cu, Mn, Fe, Ni, Th, Tl, Rb and Ba were in the range of 0.02-0.61, 0.008-0.126, 0.09-1.12, 0.001-0.012, 0.07-1.62, 19.5-73.2, 170-2100, 5.9-43.3, 228-2040, 60-337, 2.09-17.95, 0.002-0.08, 0.004-0.409, 0-150.50 and 3.1-41.2 µg/g, respectively, which were all lower than the maximum permissible limits stipulated by China (NY/T 288-2012, NY 659-2003). The target hazard quotients of each heavy metal were lower than one, and the combined risk hazard index of all heavy metals for adults was in the range of 0.10-0.85; therefore, there was no significant carcinogenic health risks to tea drinking consumers under the current dietary intake. Significant differences were found in the content of trace elements (Zn, Cu, Fe, Ni, Th, Tl, Rb and Ba) (p < 0.05); however, no significant differences were found in the content of macroelements (P, K, Ca and Mg) and trace metals (As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb, Al and Mn) in teas from different regions. Therefore, the region did not affect the heavy metal exposure risk. Correlation coefficient and principal component analyses were performed to determine the source of the elements. Three principal factors were obtained: factor 1 was positively related to Ca, Mg, As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb, Al, Mn, Fe and Th (32.63%); factor 2 to P, Zn, Cu and Ni (18.64%) and factor 3 to K and Rb (10.10%). Thus, the elements in the same factor might originate from the same source. This study provides an essential basis to understand the variance and potential risks of different elements in tea from different regions of China.

Ubiquitous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metals could induce hyperuricemia and oxidative damage individually, while their co-exposure effects on hyperuricemia risk and the potential roles of oxidative damage in these health outcomes remain poorly understood. We conducted a cross-sectional study in 1379 coke oven workers. We evaluated the levels of PAH-metal exposure and oxidative damage by urinary monohydroxy-PAHs, plasma benzo [a]pyrene-7,8-diol-9,10-epoxide-albumin (BPDE-Alb) adducts, urinary metals, urinary 8-iso-prostaglandin-F2α, and urinary 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG). The subjects were classified into cases of hyperuricemia and controls by the levels of blood uric acid. We found that the sum of multiple hydroxyphenanthrene (ΣOH-Phe) was robustly associated with the increase in hyperuricemia risk, while rubidium and strontium had robust protective associations with hyperuricemia risk (Ptrend<0.05). The risk association of ΣOH-Phe was weaker in workers with high levels of rubidium and strontium [P for modifying effect (PME) < 0.030]. The protective association of strontium was more pronounced in workers with higher ΣOH-Phe (PME = 0.014). We also found that 8-OH-dG was a risk factor for hyperuricemia (Ptrend = 0.006) and mediated 10.13% of the elevated hyperuricemia risk associated with ΣOH-Phe. Our findings suggested that individual PAHs and metals, as well as their co-exposure, may influence hyperuricemia risk among coke oven workers, with oxidative DNA damage playing a potential mediating role in their associations.
